Managing Late-Emerging Weeds in Soybean

چکیده
June 23, 2000 Deciding whether a specific weed infestation is worth treating is usually based on a subjective evaluation of the potential impact of the infestation on crop yields. The two main criteria used are 1) the number of weeds present, and 2) the specific weeds present (foxtail, velvetleaf, etc.). Another factor that is just as important, if not more so, is the emergence date of the weed in relation to the crop. Crops and weeds compete for limited resources (light, moisture, nutrients), and plants that initially capture the resources usually will have an advantage over slower developing plants for the entire growing season. Weeds that emerge more than a week after the crop are at a competitive disadvantage with the crop and less likely to have an economic impact. Thus, relative time of emergence needs to be considered when evaluating the potential impact of weeds on crop production.

In order to quantifying emergence pattern of rapeseed weeds, this experiment was conducted in 40 plots (40 quadrates at Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources University of Khuzestan, and 30 fields of Bavi (30 quadrates), Ahvaz, Iran, in 2016-2017 growing seasons was monitored, counted and recorded weekly. Three different emergence pattern of nine weed species were identified, Prickly lett...
متن کاملShort- and full-season soybean in stale seedbeds versus rolled-crimped winter rye mulch
Stale seedbeds are used by organic growers to reduce weed populations prior to crop planting. Ryemulches, derived from mechanically killed (rolled and crimped) winter rye cover crops, can serve the same purpose for spring-planted organic crops. Both methods can also be employed by conventional growers who face looming problems with herbicide resistant weeds. The objective of this research was t...
متن کاملWeed Diversity Affects Soybean and Maize Yield in a Long Term Experiment in Michigan, USA
Managing production environments in ways that promote weed community diversity may enhance both crop production and the development of a more sustainable agriculture. This study analyzed data of productivity of maize (corn) and soybean in plots in the Main Cropping System Experiment (MCSE) at the W. K. Kellogg Biological Station Long-Term Ecological Research (KBS-LTER) in Michigan, USA, from 19...
متن کاملEffects of Weeds on the Diversity and Abundance of Insects in Soybeans
Environ. Enlomol. 12: 2%-298 (1983) ABSTRACT Sweep-nel sampling and pilfalllrapping were used 10 survey insects in weedy and weedfree soybean habitals. Weedy soybean habitats consisted of (I) grassy soybeans; (2) soybeans with broadleaf weeds; and (3) soybeans with broadleaf weeds and grasses. Insect species diversity was greater in weedy soybean habitats than in weed-free soybeans. Greatest di...
